ITK participates in state funding project ELM2

Development of a high-precision linear magnetization system for the description of magnetic scales.

With the funding measure “KMU-innovativ: Produktionsforschung” (Innovative SMEs: Production Research), the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research is pursuing the goal of strengthening the innovative power of small and medium-sized enterprises as well as making research funding more attractive to SMEs in particular within the framework of the program “Innovations for tomorrow’s production, services and work”. ITK is receiving funding under this measure for the development of a high-precision linear magnetizing system for writing magnetic scales.

Magnetic-based measuring systems are used in numerous industrial sectors, for example in machine tools or in semiconductor production. In the case of very high required accuracies (significantly less than 1 µm) or in the case of longer movement sections (significantly more than 1 m), there are applications that are not accessible to previous measuring systems. To solve this challenge, the goal of the KMU-innovativ project ELM2 is to develop a demonstrator for the production of measurement systems with longer measurement lengths and higher accuracies at an improved price-performance ratio. The aim is to achieve a write length of up to 5 meters with a write accuracy of +/- 1 µm. The improvement in the level for magnetic measuring systems will be achieved by a high-precision linear magnetizing system to be developed.

“If the project is hopefully successful, two major areas of application will open up for the manufacturing sector: firstly, measuring systems for scanning platforms with longer travel distances can be produced. This represents a significant competitive advantage. Secondly, systems can be offered to manufacturers of displacement measuring systems for industrial automation, who can use them to expand and supplement their own product range,” says Dr. Ingolf Schäfer, Managing Director at ITK and project coordinator. The project duration is two years and the total funding volume is 400,000 euros.
